A good little authentic family diner type restaurant. Great huge breakfasts, pretty good lunches and dinners. Friendly servers. A good place especially to bring the older folks. Tip: avoid the meatloaf -- you'd expect it to be great in a place like this... it's not. Try one of the ridiculously large Wall's Bakery 'eclairs' sold here.

Wow! What an amazing little diner. It's a little beaten up and worn down, but the food is spectacular. We ordered the The Dave (shaved steak with an egg on top - I had pepper jack cheese and also added onions, peppers, and mushrooms on mine), 2 Bacon Blue Burgers (had a different name but we can't remember it), and 1 pancake. The Dave was absolutely amazing. You can change up the toppings, but I ordered it the way any shaved steak should be eaten, with peppers and onions! The boys were less impressed with their burgers, but the pancake was amazing just to see. As Big as the plate and butter yellow. The only thing that would have made the pancake better is real maple syrup instead of the fake stuff on the table. The meals are extremely reasonably priced too! When you first walk in, there is a display case filled with amazing little desserts. We were staying with friends who were making dinner for us that night, so we ordered one of every little dessert on the top shelf of the display (there were 5) to split amongst the four of us so we could try them all. The little strawberry one was out of this world! Light but packed full of flavor and not too sweet. There was one that was a hazelnut something that was pretty delicious as well. The others were good, but not my favorites. Unfortunately no picture to go along with the desserts. We dove in forks first!

We drive by Marie's almost every weekend on our way from Northern VA to the Northern Neck. I decided to read the reviews and as a result we stopped one Friday night for dinner! Great, down home, diner food. The place itself is certainly nothing fancy. Don't let the physical appearance fool you - someone knows how to cook some real diner food in the back! Surprisingly we had to wait for a table. About 20 minutes or so. Once we were seated it was clear that the place was full of regulars. Wait staff being called by name as well as customers being greeted by wait staff by name. Although we knew no one and no one knew us we were still treated as if we were neighbors! Despite the healthy choices on the menu (not a lot) we opted for the chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken. Both were smothered in white gravy and we chose corn fitters, mac and cheese, green beans and fried okra as the sides. Side salads and rolls came with the entrees as well. The rolls were not really anything to speak of and needed butter badly - so I'd pass on those! The salads were fine - greens out of a bag - again nothing to really speak of. The entrees were delicious and the sides were very good. Corn fritters were so smooth and creamy! I had to keep myself from eating them all! So much food for so little money! We took half of our entrees home along with some of the corn fritters and fried okra and had a full lunch the next day! Delicious a day later! Another diner was having the crab soup and crab cakes. They looked awesome. We look forward to stopping again and trying some of the fresh seafood dishes next time!

Amazing, amazing food! If you're looking for a meal that tastes like it's been made by someone who really cares about their food, this is the place to be!

I just got home with my takeout order and am absolutely amazed at how much food we got for $22. This is a small diner, with quite a bit of a wait, if you go on an early Sunday morning. At first glance it reminds you of a mini Ihop. There's a "wait to be seated" sign at the main entrance and booths with blue cushions seated near the window. Picking up my food was a breeze (since it was takeout). When I got home I looked inside my containers and I knew that this was going to be a 2 day meal. I tasted a few bites and put it on the fridge for later. Definitely my tasty treat for later (and tomorrow).

The food was good,we had the open face turkey and open face roast beef. You get a huge portion of food for the money. The waiter was not good. He never came back to check to see if we got what we ordered and he only checked on us once and that's when we were finished and only needed take home box and to pay. Need to upgrade some things and remove the huge wall of mirror's. No one wants to see themselves eat! Overall good food. I will go back only because the food is good and priced well. Need to work on good customer service.

I wasn't too impressed. Waitress forgot my onion rings, forgot my dessert order, and she seemed in a hurry to get us out. They were out of vanilla ice cream, bananas so no banana split dessert. My Philly cheesesteak was fair. My daughter had the open faced turkey sandwich which was great. Gravy awesome. Kids burgers were good but the kids chicken tenders were not. I imagine this is more of a breakfast place than lunch or dinner. Next time I'll try the breakfast. A slice of mediocre apple pie for $3.50 and two small scoops of ice cream with caramel for $4.75 was on the expensive side. Lastly , their sandwiches don't come with fries so a sandwich with fries is about $10. Pricey for mediocre food. Stick to the breakfast or burger.

I love diner food. Just to get that out front. We decided to stop here the Sunday morning after my friend's bachelor party. Hit the spot. Portions are huge, be aware since every one of us had to take food home. They were very busy since it was Sunday about 11:45 when we got here. Had to wait about 15 - 20 minutes to be seated. Reasonable given the huge crowd waiting. Things moved along quickly. Our waitress appeared almost instantly, kept our glasses full, frequently checked on us, and was cheerful without being fake. Huge thumbs up. Food was out within 15 minutes of us ordering. This is diner food so it was a bit greasy (exactly why we wanted diner food!) and again, huge portions. We all had things from the breakfast menu so can't comment on anything other than that. If you're in the area try Marie's instead of a chain. Go local!

7/6/2015: I apologize, but did you just say you're a family business? What part of "family" did you show my family when we spent our hard earned money to be treated with total disrespect? Your management (it was you possibly) came to MY table with MY family and intimidated me because your server got my order confused. She showed NO respect and TOTAL disregard for MY family, so if you can't respond to my review because you're so worried about your "family business" pay close attention to how you treat other families that eat at your diner so you can continue to support your family by running a better family business. What that a little better, fam?

Stuck with a group that insisted on coming here despite my protests. Same poor food. Same spotty service.

Went here on Father's Day so it was really busy. We waited approx 20-30 mins for our table. The waitress was very friendly and provided good service. I enjoyed my pancakes. Everyone else seemed satisfied with their meal. After we started eating, we realized our home fries were never brought out. We mentioned to waitress and she was apologetic. It was really busy so I understood and with all of the other food we ordered, no one had room for home fries anyway! I will definitely go back.

Food is ok, but servers are slow and rude. Owner's rude too and is actually confrontational if you're not satisfied with your meal.

I had the pleasure of eating here after a night of heavy drinking. I have to say, whenever I see a diner, I think of a meal at Double T Diner and the diarrhea that follows. This was not the case at Marie's. We came as a group of seven, unknowingly right before they closed for lunch. Despite that fact, they still seated us after a short time waiting. The menu is pretty large, but they keep it simple. Between the seven of us, we had three country fried steaks, a country fried chicken, two hamburgers, and "The Dave," a breakfast platter. I ordered the country fried steak with corn fritters and coleslaw. The steak was kinda tough to cut into, but it tasted great with the homemade gravy they poured on top of it and the breading was crunchy and had just the right amount of salt. The corn fritters were sweet, creamy, and had a great crunch when you bit into them. Coleslaw was good, but nothing spectacular. The portion was immense. The steak almost took up my entire plate. Normally, I would expect to pay upwards 12-14 dollars for a meal that size, but my meal came out to a whopping $7.99. The service was very good. The waitresses joked around and were very attentive and gave us more napkins and refills without us even having to ask. I'm on a Keto diet and I live an hour and a half north of La Plata, so I definitely won't be eating like that everyday, but I will definitely come back the next time I'm in town.

My favorite go to place in La Plata. I have never had a bad meal here. Their breakfast servings are huge and taste great. I usually have the french toast breakfast but my husband like the pancakes, which are really big. My favorite dinner item is the crab cakes. I swear they are some of the best I have tasted. Some of my other favorites are the steak sub, club sub, and the bacon cheese burger. The cheese burger is delicious with a artisan type bun. The place is small so you may have to wait a little for seating but it is worth it. This is a down home type of place. Oh and the deserts are also good.

Can't believe I drove past this treasure on 301 for so long! Breakfast here is OUT OF THIS WORLD... pancakes that are obviously freshly homemade and FALLING OFF THE PLATE. The crab soup at lunch is a must too! Magnificent, true home cooking in a super casual family friendly atmosphere!

Definitely a fan, but stop by on a weekday for your first visit unless you have some serious time to kill. Saturday and Sunday wait times can range from 20 - 45 minutes. The service is great once you get a seat and the food is priced fairly for what you get.

NOT FANCY. Consistently great food and service. Priced right. Sometimes you may have a waiting period to be seated... Most of the time. But worth the wait. BEEF GRAVY AND BISCUITS , YUM!

Just finished eating here at Marie's Diner and I must say it has made me stuffed. Ordered their fried chicken lunch meal and it was superb. I wish I had more mashed potatoes however (couldn't get enough of it!) The bacon cheese fries were a big sad face. The fries were ok, nothing special. Overall, the food has made my belly warm and I'm one happy girl.

The breakfast was great! Enjoyed it!! I had everything to go...and, it was still nice and hot when I got home. I had order a Belgian waffle, western omelet with bacon added, loaded fries, bacon, french toast, pancake, and grits....again everything was great.... the diner had friendly staff and a nice southern feel...but boy oh boy is it out dated...sigh..well calling in orders is a breeze and yes you will feel a breeze "hell a breeze" you would literally freeze by the door if you are waiting for a table, because it can get pack in there...but overall I will return to order to go... hell, I do not mind even sitting down to eat!!

There is always a wait a sign of a good restaurant! Today waited around 30 min. Once seated the waitress was fast and friendly...but then it went downhill. Took almost 30 minutes for our food, and then my order was wrong. Brought country fried steak instead of chicken. Waitress error, had to ask a couple of times for water and finally brought at end of meal. Have eaten here before and mostly good but this time it was just ok. Between my order being wrong and half my plate having cold food, not the best experience. I think they stay busy because they give a lot of good for a low price. Personally, I would rather have better service and less food!

Awesome breakfast! It was just what we were looking for while passing through MD on our way to the Inner Harbor. We had a short wait (about 15 minutes) before we were seated. We got an omelet with broccoli, ham and mushrooms, a breakfast with eggs and giant pancakes and chipped beef. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. They were huge but we did our best to eat as much as we possibly could (and still had leftovers). I wasn't sure if the chipped beef was homemade from scratch or pre made but it was good none-the-less.

ON Every WED. They have a Fried Chicken Special which is very good! 4 pieces of chicken fried to perfection! Comes with 2 sides and a hunk of Cornbread for $8.99 The two times I have had this special my Cornbread was cold and hard!! That's my only complaint!! It would be very good cornbread if it was fresh and HOT!! They give you butter that hard you can't even put on it! Both times I said something to waitress and got same reaction!! Like Oh Well what do I expect for $8.99!! I expect her to go heat it up!! To me the servers there are Slow Country Girls that think they can do what they want! Cause they have a job!! In my Opinion the service is slow and waitress acts like she doesn't even care!!! I have never had Good Service there! But I keep going back because most of the food is good! Except that Cold Cornbread!!!

  • Leah L.

Between addressing my mother and I as "girls" just to inform us that we were indeed "in the south," letting us know that their special was the fried chicken, and the waitress abruptly storming off before either of us could get a word in edgewise, not quite thrilled at the prospect of returning here. Honestly, I'd rather eat gravel. Also, having the hostess stare you down with dirty looks upon entering the dining area is always a nice touch. I guess it's comforting to know that some things never change in the south, and there are still place where you can be a paying customer and treated with substandard services.

Not just a good breakfast place! I go to this place often and tried other things since last review...Cream of crab soup is EXCELLENT, fried chicken is great (can't believe a yelper complained about it!..some people), burgers hit the spot. Even the fish and chips are good. My kids love coming here, it's got a good 'community' feel to it, a mix of 'old timers', families and blue and white collars on their lunch-break. Bottom line is if you want good food at a decent price and your not expecting the Ritz Carlton then you won't be disappointed!

I can't believe I lived in Charles County for 20 years and never came to this place. On a road trip from VA back to Columbia, MD, I decided to stop. On a Monday afternoon past the lunch rush this place was still hopping! While I was super tempted by the SUPER BLT ( Almost a pound of smoked Bacon on thick sliced whole grain wheat bread with lettuce and tomato), I selected the Turkey Bacon Ranch: Sliced turkey with bacon & choice of melted cheese on grilled Kaiser roll. This was real turkey, not lunch meat! YUMMO. My dining partner chose the Classic Club on toasted rye. He loved it. There is a huge menu and apparently they serve breakfast all day. I saw a few other diners eating gargantuan omelettes and pancakes too. Their "Marie's Burger" : topped with caramelized onions, melted blue cheese and bacon sounded very good and it's a sure bet I'll try this next time I come by this place.

It was gross. Sticky table and weird smell. Everything looked dirty. Disgusting food. Sweet potato fries that tasted like cake batter. Burger was overcooked, underseasoned. The "Breakfast Burger" was literally bun, patty, fried egg, and that was it. It was inedible.

The old route from Philly to Newport News gets off the interstates south of Baltimore and follows the trail along the western shore of Chesapeake Bay. Route 301 slows to a crawl around Waldorf, Maryland, where there is the most sprawl. I never stop there. Just beyond there is the smaller town of La Plata. Marie's Diner is a throw back to the old style food emporium of the last century. Basics menu with a few local specialties (crab cakes) that draws primarily locals on a Saturday afternoon. The place was jammed with a mix of old and young, suburban and rural, and travelers looking for a decent meal that did not start with the word, "McDonalds" or "Pizza Hut." I went with my old standby on the occasions when I am in an uncharted place, a Patty Melt with Fries. It came out at the requested Medium finish, with a pile of Sauteed Onions and melted Swiss, on a decent tasting Rye (See photo). It tasted pretty good, and the patty itself seemed larger than the 6 oz. they advertise for the standard burgers. The fries crunched with a rough exterior and were only okay. While it was not gourmet by any stretch, it was very satisfying, and totally fit the over ambiance of the diner. Looking around at the other patrons, the majority of the meals appeared to be burgers and crab cakes, along with some good looking milk shakes. I will try them next time and report back on them. Marie's is a 5 star on Americana and down home cuisine. 3 star on food quality and presentation, and 3 star on service. The price is on the low end of the scale. $10 plus tip with a large coffee to go. A fun experience overall.

Great old fashioned Diner. I would recomend this place to anyone. Their sweet potato fries are excellent.

The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the Country Fried Chicken off of the lunch menu. The portion size was much larger than I anticipated. The food was absolutely delicious. The wait staff was kind, courteous and very responsive. I'd definitely recommend this place to friends & family...and I'll definitely be back.

My husband and I had been searching for a diner in the area besides the chains and we've been unimpressed until Marie's. When we got there around 10 on a Sunday, it was busy. The wait was worth it (even though almost everyone seemed to have to wait outside). I had a veggie omelette and my husband had steak and eggs. He said it's the best he's ever had. It was a legitimate steak. My omelette was great also. The home fries weren't unusually good, but they seemed fresh and homemade. The toast and coffee didn't stand out. Our server was amazing. Although they were very busy and it seemed like she had a ton of tables, we were never left wanting. Little things like already having hot sauce and ketchup on the table were nice touches. It was a bit noisy and I don't know how their non-breakfast menu is, but we will definitely be back for breakfast again.

I must be missing something about this place. I have been here twice and both times I have been disappointed. Recently decided to try this place with my family before the fair. I guess If I could title this review I would say "Would ya like some chicken with your salt?" or "Wheres the shrimp?" For starters my father ordered the shrimp basket. The menu said it comes with 9 (or 12??? I cannot remember the menu exactly ) Shrimp. He got 6 in his basket. I got the Country Fried Chicken and I specifically told the waitress that it was very important that the white gravy is on the SIDE! She brings out the dish and puts it down in front of me completely COVERED in white gravy and I said "oh.the gravy was supposed to be on the side?". Instead of asking to take it back and fix it - she says "oh yeah we told them that" and walked away. I could not believe it. So I started to attempt to wipe it off. Then I cut into the chicken and when I bit into it - it was soooooooooooooooooooo salty. It was like chewing on a salt lick or somethng. I told the waitress I could not eat it. So she took it away - she didnt give me the option to order anything else - nothing. Worse yet - I only took two bites and she saw that - she did not offer to take it off the bill. Essentially - I just threw 10 bucks in the trash. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I am a stickler for customer service and if its bad - I wont be back. My moms spaghetti was good and the portions are huge at this place.

Food was fine and my bacon egg and cheddar biscuit was tasty but the corn beef hash was a little too salty. Nice portions. My waitress was friendly. Place could use a makeover and internal paint job though. Prices are good. Would likely return.

We decided to try this place out for breakfast. We were seated right away which was surprising since one of the waitresses told us the line is usually out the door. The service was great and very attentive. The food was excellent. The country fried chicken was the best I have found. We will definitely be back.

Excellent for what it is: a simple diner with homestyle cooking. Nothing seems bought in bulk and delivered in a big food service truck. Their pastries are excellent, love their omelets and grill fried potatoes, and cheese steak sandwiches are awesome.

Great food for the price. Except for the locals, it's a well kept secret. Fish n chips and egg salad portions were plenty. Daily specials looked good too.

Came in and ordered some breakfast. Creamed chipped beef, sausage and gravy are on the one! Pancakes... Fluffy, thick and delicious! The short stack is bigger than my head, and I have a huge head! Lol! The sausages are big so you'll only need two. Large portions and cheap prices. The staff is friendly and make you feel right@ home.. Nice cozy little spot! I only wish they were open past 2pm on Sundays.

Overall, food and service pretty good. Disappointed, I could not order Belgian Waffles with my steak; was told "they're not going to do that". Have found a place where I can get both with no problems, so will likely not be back to Marie's Diner.

Very disappointed for the first time....Our waitress had her hair hanging in her face leaving us to question if the meal would be served with a side order of hair and so it began. The time 4:45 pm. We asked about the evening's specials. We were told it was too early so we inquired as to what time they began cause maybe we could return a little later "oh and by the way what will the specials be and when do they start?". Our answer around 5:30 or 6:00 but they have not decided what they would be...We paid for our soda and iced tea.$4.77 ....and we left. We go on a semi regular basis...made the 18 mile trip especially to go...Note to business owner ...untrained staff can break your business/ Just thought you should know

This is a place that I've referred friends and family to. I even ordered take out for my mother who lives in a nursing home around the corner from Marie's. As a matter of fact, we order dinner for her prior to taking our out of state guest to enjoy some crab cakes. Our evening starting like this... the waitress came to take our drink orders. I requested five slices of lemons with a diet coke. (I've ordered it like that before there) I I was told we could only have two slices. Once we started ordering dinner, one of the children asked for string beans instead of the coleslaw. She was told they couldn't do that. We asked to have it as a side. My out of town guest and I both ordered crab cake baskets. Mine with french fries, her was with sweet potatoes fries. The other adult ordered the pork chop dinner. The macaroni and cheese had to be sent back, because we could not get a folk in it. Yes, the waitress saw that. She took it back and bought out another one. As we compared the crab cakes it was very noticeable that mine crab basket crab cake was smaller then the crab platter and the other crab cake basket. We showed the waitress and I asked her "doesn't the size look different to you?" We also told her told her that one of the crab basket was ordered with sweet potatoes fries. She never offered nor did she try to reorder the sweet potato fries. Although, I apologized to my friend she just ate her food. The waitress took my crab cake back to the kitchen. The owner brought the crab cake back to the table. According to him, it was measured before It was cooked and measured when I sent it back. It weighted the same as the others. I thought that was a little odd, since I tasted the crab cake. He kept insisting it was MY crab cake and I should accept it. I repeatably told him, I was not satisfied with it. He asked me what I wanted him to with it? I told him to discharged it as he would other food, that customers are not satisfied with. When the bill arrived, the waitress informed us the owner told her NOT to remove the uneaten basket from the bill. According to him the crab cake was fine, and to no fault of the restaurant therefore he would not remove it. Earlier that day we gave him compliments on the service and quality of the food. I tried talking to him, but to no avail. I've eaten at four stars and Michelin starred restaurants abroad and States sided. I have never been told to pay for something I did not consume because it met their exceptions and not mine. I once took a customer service course years ago, when a major food chain owner once spoke. He said, "he would rather lose the cost of a meal over a customers anytime." If only only we all thought that way. Needless to say, I was beyond disappointed on the out come of this transaction.

TERRIBLE!! I have a son with allergies (dairy & eggs) and we were turned away! They refused to serve us and on top of that told me "good luck with finding somewhere to eat" before I left!! My response: I have never had an issue finding somewhere to eat until today! My son is 15 so we have frequented many restaurants! I will be sure to share this information with everyone I can. No family should have to go through this....to top it off, they still gave us a bill for the drinks. They should be ashamed! BTW they precook all their food so if you think its fresh, think again!

I like visiting this place when I am off work from overnight. Quick service. Inexpensive home cooked meal. Seating isn't all that comfortable but overall a good time. Had undercooked sausage at last visit I was a little upset with but I pushed it aside and just dealt with the loss. Otherwise a continued favorite!

Me and the hubby were looking for an alternative breakfast spot and this place in the middle of no where just happened to appear! The littlely LOVES IHOP so we were hard pressed to find something that a 4 year old would find acceptable, however when she saw the over the plate pancakes she was sold. It's is a classic diner. Older sassy waitresses, huge portions, good food. When we have the energy to make the trip up the road this is our spot. It's a little known southern Maryland gem! The waits are never longer than 15 minutes which beats IHOP and bob Evans any day. The only thing I would skip are the cakes in the case. They are huge and look awesome, but as a baked a little underwhelming. My loves are: huge pancakes, chili cheese fries and dog, Reuben...I could go on!

Very good. It always has a line out the door and for good reason. The breakfast menu is well priced and almost everything was excellent. The only thing that we found to be subpar were the potatoes. They just seemed to taste odd. The ham and cheddar omelet was awesome, the chicken fried steak was amazing and the biscuits and English muffin were very good as well. My husband also had the peanut butter milkshake, which he said was delicious. It actually tasted like peanuts. Overall, it made for a good breakfast date, just be prepared for a 10 minute wait to be seated.

Not my first time here. Love the food, good service. I'm a huge fan of a bagel sandwich and my daughter loves a good hot chocolate with whipped cream. The home fries were cooked perfect and was a huge helping. My daughter and I shared them. I grew up in New York and i love a good diner. Marie's reminds me of home.

I went to this family restaurant a lot growing up. It's only a few miles from my childhood home. When I was back east visiting, I decided to relive a part of my childhood and hit up Marie's for dinner. I walked in and not much had changed (I mean that in the best way possible). The booths were a little beat up, the Orioles and Nats were on the TVs and the place was packed for a Tuesday night. I had my heart set on some blue crabs while I was in town and since it was off season, I was going to get some crab cakes. I ordered the crab cake dinner. They came out and were big, lumpy and had very few breadcrumbs in them. They were amazing. Couple 'em with some fries and I had my perfect southern Maryland crab fix. I was thrilled with what I ordered. And the price was very reasonable. The same thing in LA would have been at least twice as much and half as good. On my way to the restroom, I noticed that every single person in the restaurant (except me) had ordered the Tuesday night special: fresh made baked lasagna. And then I remembered that's one of the things I miss about small towns; people coming to a mom and pop restaurant to get the weekly special that was lovingly hand made from scratch. I wished I could've stayed another week, because I would've been back and eating that lasagna with a huge smile on my face. If you happen to be in La Plata, love a good home made recipe type of place, Marie's is your place.

I had high hopes for this place; looked like a local institution. The place was fairly empty when I arrived and I seated myself. The wooden table seemed clean, but felt sticky...which I didn't like. Service was pretty good; my server was efficient but a little on the curt side. I visited for breakfast, which I think is the easiest meal of the day to prepare. I think I might have been disappointed by dinner, but for breakfast this place was fine. However, the baked goods in the glass case looked solid. Breakfasts here are pretty inexpensive, around $6. I opted for a more expensive ($9.50) meal which came with "award-winning country ham." I would recommend that as a choice. This wasn't the "something special" I was hoping for, but there was nothing wrong with the food or service, and the price was quite reasonable.

Decided to come in this morning with a friend for a quick breakfast. I was happy to see that the waitstaff performance had improved from my last visit. We had a different waitress today and I highly recommend asking for her, I know we will when we come back. Jamie was super attentive, quick to greet us and take our orders and made recommendations on what to get since we were both pretty indecisive. I had the single pancake breakfast. The pancake was massive I only recommend getting one, and was fluffy and cooked perfectly. My friend got an omelette, again it was huge and cooked to perfection. I'm glad we gave Marie's a second chance and will definitely be back again!

I love this place! Clean, fast service, great menu selections, large portions of great tasting food, and low prices. What's not to like ? Every time I come here for breakfast the wait staff is friendly and attentive and they really want you to be satisfied. The food is served at the proper temperature. I love steak and eggs. The picture shows why I order it at this Restaraunt. You can cut the steak your fork and it was exactly as I had asked for, medium. The area has a lot of historic sites so you can make a day of it.

After attempting to eat at the Blue Dog Saloon, and leaving due to a rude and unorganized staff, we decided on visiting Marie's Diner in LaPlata. The staff was very nice and accommodating. The restaurant was packed. It was a bit loud inside, but I did not mind the sound as this is a true, local, family restaurant. Our waitress was upbeat and friendly. She provided menus quickly and told us about the prime rib specials. My boyfriend and I both ordered prime rib. We also ordered the cream of crab soup, at the waitress's suggestion. The crab soup had a good flavor. It was a little thicker than what I expected. Slight sherry taste and a good amount of crab meat. I would probably order this again. Dinner salads were fine - blue cheese dressing was good. This was as expected. The prime rib was very good. Good seasoning, and having ordered medium rare, it was truly medium rare. I ordered broccoli and squash...wish the squash was seasoned a little more and cooked through - it was under seasoned and under cooked. My boyfriend ordered mac & cheese and squash. He felt the same about the squash, and his mac & cheese was a bit dry. Over all, the atmosphere was pleasant. The wait staff was excellent. The food was good, but nothing earth shattering on our first visit. Prices were reasonable. We will come back here again... the menu was pretty expansive and having seen some of the other dishes served to other customers, we both want to give it a try again.

Portions are huge, which I love. This is definitely the best diner I've ever been to. I'm pretty sure all the food is made from scratch, and the flavors are on point. The service was also really good.

I agree with another review..place smelled greasy. I feel l like I brought the smell home on my clothes and hair. They need a filter/exhaust fan in the kitchen. It was noisy...acoustical ceiling would help. Food was average...my grilled chicken dinner was dry. Don't know if I liked it enough to go back. My husband's crab cakes were good but he did not like the coleslaw..too much mayo. Corn fritters were OK. Comparing his $20 meal to my $10 meal...I got twice as much food. I gave him half my salad. A friend brought us dessert once and it was good. It is pricey.

We stumbled upon Marie's after church on Sunday. I am very glad we did. Greatest, fast service and good home style cooking. Prices are very reasonable. I had the chipped beef omelette, which was something I had never thought of before, and it was very good. The while family had omelettes. All omelettes are three eggs and served with choice of home fries or grits, and toast or a biscuit. We are planning to frequent Marie's often.

Marie's is great! The breakfast line on the weekends is out the door, but we rarely wait over 15 minutes. The pancakes are huge and very easily shared. Great service! Very comfortable surroundings. Can't wait to go back

We stopped at Marie's Diner en route from MD to NC based solely on the Yelp reviews. All I can say is, thanks again Yelp. You've steered us to another delicious meal, and I appreciate it. I had the pancake that many have spoken of, and man, was it amazing. I say "pancake" in the singular because I ordered the single pancake breakfast, and was glad that I did. That sucker was the size of my head and about half an inch thick to boot. My bf had the fried crab cake and I thought he was going to die, he was so happy. I tried a bite and indeed, it was one of the better crab cakes I've ever had, and I grew up in MD. We will definitely be back to Marie's. In fact, I dare say we'll choose the route for our drive differently knowing that it's there!

Good spot The good: great spot to go to if you don't want to cook breakfast. The sausage gravy is excellent. The waffles are good. Very cheap. The bad: the decor- well there isn't any decor, the place looks very run down, kind of dirty looking. Both times that we ate here they messed up my orders & the second time they weren't that busy so there was no excuse. Overall: probably won't return here but I am glad I tried it.

Great place for breakfast and lunch. Good pancakes, eggs and biscuits, sandwiches, soups and great desserts (soft ice cream, eclairs, and a variety of pies). I like their cream of crab soup. It is thick and it has chunks of crab. Nothing fancy, but pretty good quality mom and pop type dinner.

One of only a few available breakfast places in the area, we sighted Marie's on our way to another option and decided a detour was in order. We arrived to a hand full of other guests waiting outside to be seated. We joined their ranks and ended up waiting about 20 minutes at 1030 on a Sunday. Service: When seated, our server Robin was cheery, attentive and fast in getting our drinks (very large OJ) and food order. She was apologetic when the food hadn't arrived after about 15 minutes. It came immediately afterwards. She brought the check, appropriately, without prompting when we appeared to be slowing down on out food. All this while she had many other tables. Food: My steak and eggs were great. Real strip steak, not flat flank. Eggs exactly as ordered. Plus they have English muffins. Wife's veggie omelet was great. Heavy on veggies and fluffy eggs. Good choice off omelet cheeses. Hashbrowns were chunky and had onions which we both love. Coffee was good. OJ was large and great. Price: Around 24 bucks for both of our food and drinks. Atmosphere: Nice. Small, open dining area. People sometimes conversed between tables. Overall: Great.

This place is a STAR in a land of duds. No really. I tried it for dinner after soccer practice at CSM. My son ordered the clams in white wine sauce--yes an 11 year old that's a foodie. That's how I know it was good. We didn't get anything like 'hamburgers'--always the real food that they cook. SLAMMIN'

Solid diner. Exactly what you'd expect from a typical diner, no better, no worse. Good crowd, which is probably representative of the friendly service and the fact that there aren't too many other options in the area.

We were looking for a place to eat and didn't want to go to the usual chain restaurants, so we decided to try Marie's Family Restaurant. Don't let the looks of this place fool you--they have delicious, home-cooked food and very good customer service...all for a reasonable price. We tried the cream of crab soup--WOW! Delicious with big chunks of crab as you would expect. We've had cream of crab soup in other restaurants, but none of them compare to the one they make at Marie's. My husband had the meatball sandwich and I had a BLT on rye. Both were freshly made and very tasty. To top it off, everything was reasonably priced AND our waitress was very friendly--she checked on us regularly (but not too much). We are definitely fans and will be back when we are in the area.

Pretty standard, solid, tasty diner fare. I ended up getting the creamed chip beef omelet and really enjoyed it. Disappointed by the grits, though - they tasted like instant. Not what I was hoping for there.

We loved Maries when they were open years ago. Was sad when they closed and turned into a Mexican place. Now it's back to business and for the most part it's all yummy. It's small, homey/divey - ish, but clean. It isn't fancy but I'm fine with that. It's sort of like visitng your Nana's house on Sunday with all the family gathered for dinner. There are alot of regulars and that's a nice thing. Service can be slow sometimes (like at any place you eat at and because they cook it fresh, yes you may have to wait a bit) Sandy is awesome! and she's the one we ask for most. Joy is another waitress here we have had the pleasure of being waited on by. Rikki is a newer employee and she is very friendly. The Awesome steak and cheese is huge and very tasty. Sweet potato fries are good but sometimes the night cook tends to overcook them (things) The belgian waffle - one of the best I've had anywhere. They have great link sausage, scrapple, meatloaf and cream chipped beef. (I like mine over crispy home fries) They carry the Hershey brand of ice cream - yum! and have a dessert case as you come in full of tempting desserts. Coconut cake, Carrot cake, pies, the bread pudding is really good (something I havent seen here lately though - hint hint) Another recent addition is they are now selling Walls Bakery's World Famous Chocolate Eclairs. eat here - don't be afraid of the general shabbiness of the place. shabby chic is in these days.:)

Can't believe I've lived in Charles county 17 years and just found Marie's Diner. Great food, huge portions and super friendly service. It made me feel like I was back at my Grandmom's and she was making all of our favorites again. I had Fish n Chips, Gravy fries and can't miss Corn Fritters. All were great - I had enough for dinner, too. Can't wait to go back again!

I have been coming here for over 10 years. We have been here three times in as many weeks. Tonight was suppose to be for coffee and to share a pastry. After looking at the online menu, things changed. Steamed Mussels in white wine, shallots, cream sauce sounded very interesting, made my mouth water. We ordered a dinner plate to share and fried shrimp dinner plate to share. Both dinners came with a side, we opted for corn fritters with each meal. First, the corn fritters were a 10. Second, dromroll please, the mussels were a 10 also (picture posted). Never did get the eclair to share, portions of what we ordered didn't allow room for dessert (the reason we went to Marie's in the first place. The eclair will have to be next time, no doubt. A wonderful meal with fabulous company.

After passing by Marie's several times, we decided to check it out and we were not disappointed. Food was really good! I had the open faced roast beef sandwich and the mashed potatoes were great! Stopped going there two years ago. We were sitting in the back corner and were disgusted when we looked up at the air vent. If it looks like that in the dining area imagine what the vents look like in the kitchen. Food was always less than avg. we love supporting a small local biz but these owners need to dump money back into their businesses... Don't want to hear when some franchise closes them down. Clean the place up, you could have a gold mine!

Oh....my...gosh...the meatloaf. Probably some of the best meatloaf I've ever had. And even the sweet potato fries and coleslaw that I ordered with it were awesome. It was a good, down-home type of place that fits in perfectly in La Plata.

I was driving down the road that this place calls home and decided to yelp a nearby restaurant to avoid the other options I'd seen (Taco Bell, KFC....you get the idea). I found Marie's restaurant was a block away. The food was really great. Diner food for sure, but everything looked great. I had a steak and cheese, which was huge and tasty -- no shortage on the meat. it was really hard to determine what to order, b/c all the other diners' food looked so great. The staff was really, really nice and honest about what was good on the menu (tho there was a resounding "everything" before sharing what was particularly good). There was a line to get seated, but it went super fast. They run a well oiled machine. This was a nice respite from city life and restaurants...a little country not far from home.

While the waitrons are friendly, they are untrained and terrible at their jobs. Had to ask three times just to get a cup of coffee. Order was repeatedly hosed up. Food is ok, but no better than any other diner. Won't be back anytime soon.

Marie's is the best family home-style restaurant in La Plata. The quality is surprisingly high for such reasonable prices and the understated decor and service. This is a place where the locals go: unpretentious, comfortable, welcoming, authentic in the true sense of the word: which is to say honest. The first time we went, my wife ordered the salmon, and was surprised at the perfectly cooked filet, succulent, with just the right accompanying overtones. I ordered the meatloaf, and while one of our dinner partners thought it was a little dry, I thought it was quite good. You owe it to yourself (and family) to come and have a relaxing meal here. Highly recommended.

Long wait time, bad/inattentive service/staff, mediocre (at best) food & pricey for what you get, the quality of the food and the service I was so looking forward to trying Marie's after reading the reviews above. Sadly, we should have just just chosen to eat somewhere else. The service was absolutely ridiculous. There was not even a rush while we were there. 1 1/2 hrs for 3 easy, very simple meals: a meal of pancakes, bacon & home fries, a meal of just one waffle & the last meal of eggs, bacon & home fries. Took us literally over 45 minutes (I think it was actually an hour but giving benefit of doubt) in order to get our 3 simple meals. I had to beg a different waitress for 1 refill of coffee (I was just happy for the 1 refill. Never got a 2nd) and my son never got his refill of milk. Our waitress kept disappearing. A few times I'd see her and try to get her attention but she would not even look in our direction. It even took 10 minutes of waiting (eventually I had to grab someone and demand someone help me pay w/my card) just to pay our bill... The food was mediocre at best (again, me being nice). Not one of the three meals was even close to half eaten. My son's waffle was really terrible. He took one bite and was done. After trying it myself, I realized why he refused to eat it. By now we had been there for over an hour and we did not have all day to sit in Marie's (much less an additional 45+ minutes to wait on another food order), nor was the rest of the food good, so I figured that it was just not worth the time and effort to ask for another waffle or something else. In general, the food was just not very good. Nor was the food worth boxing up to take home. Mediocre is a very kind description of our breakfasts tbh. Also, kinda pricey for what you get. Our breakfasts were definitely not worth the cost. Will not be eating there again. Long wait time, bad/inattentive service/staff, mediocre (at best) food & pricey for what you get, the quality of the food and the service. Giving 1 star is probably more than deserved.

Went to Marie's on Saturday, June 9, 2012 - about 10:45 am. Place was packed - waited about 10 minutes for a table. Went for breakfast - but lunch was available - so I ordered the Meatloaf, Mashed Potatoes and Mac & Cheese (yes - two starches - usually have a salad - LOL). Meatloaf was outstanding, real mashed potatoes and the mac and cheese was served in big ramkin - white cheeses - outstanding. This is real diner food - it is a diner and I enjoyed it and will go back - been going for years. Hated the place when it changed to a Mexican Restaurant - it is "Marie's Dinner" again! PS - love Mexican food - was not impressed when the place tried to be a Mexican place. Staff is excellent - kudos to the chef!

If you are looking for real southern breakfast food - you found it! The pancakes are as large as your head- the portions are hefty! You seat yourself and the place looks really rinky dink but the food is yummy. My family ordered French toast, pancakes, loaded home fries, bacon, eggs and strawberries. We all left happy and super stuffed, and we decided its our new breakfast spot (this and iHop)

I used to love this place when it was a diner, then it was remade into a Mexican restaurant with American breakfast, then it was closed for a bit. Now that Marie's has been reopened as strictly a diner again, I decided to try out their breakfast. It was great! I got an egg breakfast with smoked ham for $6.95. It came with a big, juicy, flavorful slice of ham, two eggs cooked perfectly to order, home fries that were pretty good, and a biscuit (i could have had grits instead of home fries or toast or an english muffin instead of a biscuit) My mom got pancakes that were big & fluffy and tasted great. The quality of the food was excellent, the restaurant was clean, service was friendly and efficient, and the iced tea was freshly brewed (bonus stars for that alone) We will be back!

Though the food is relatively good, don't bother eating here unless you have the time to wait. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing the employees are stuck in that true "country" mentality. Be prepared for at least 15 minutes for someone to actually get around to serving you (even if you're the only table occupied) and at least 30 to 45 minutes for the actual food. On one occasion I stopped in to just purchase a couple (as in 2) items from their dessert selection behind the front counter. It was a complete and utter nightmare. The young waitress couldn't even tell me what flavors the pies were- and it took her -I kid you not- nearly 10 minutes to change the reciept tape. When I asked for tha manager to handle the transaction, he shorted me at least 3 dollars in change. I would have complained but I didnh't have the rest of the night to wait for refund- much less an apology, which I didn't recieve. Some of the staff might be friendly, but sometimes that just doesn't make up for their inattentiveness, and poor and disorderly service...

Now this is a fun place if you want the simple life of breakfast. The waitress staff is a blast. The food is your good old home made like Grandma made it, in fact they have a server that goes by the nick name grandma, just ask her and she will show you the kids. The place is small but they pack them in because the food is so good. Prices are not a pain in the pocket ether.
